Organ transplantation is a complex medical procedure involving the replacement of a failing or damaged organ with a healthy one from a donor. The types of organs commonly transplanted include kidneys, liver, heart, lungs, pancreas, and intestines.
Kidney:
Chronic kidney disease or end-stage renal disease (ESRD)
Symptoms: Severe fatigue, reduced urine output, swelling (edema), shortness of breath, high blood pressure, nausea, and anemia.
Liver:
End-stage liver disease or cirrhosis
Symptoms: Jaundice, severe fatigue, abdominal swelling (ascites), confusion (hepatic encephalopathy), easy bruising or bleeding, and itching.
Heart:
Severe heart failure or cardiomyopathy
Symptoms: Persistent chest pain, extreme fatigue, shortness of breath, swelling in legs and abdomen, and arrhythmias.
Lungs:
Severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), cystic fibrosis, pulmonary fibrosis
Symptoms: Chronic cough, severe shortness of breath, recurrent respiratory infections, and low blood oxygen levels.
Pancreas:
Severe type 1 diabetes with kidney damage or recurrent severe hypoglycemia
